Notes on Water is a photo book of work by Jim Cooke and Katya de Grunwald. A shared reverential and quiet approach to the elusive and essential nature of water became a collaboration on a series of exhibitions and this publication.

With an affinity for their subject and through observations of fleeting beauty they found in the natural ebbs and flow of tides; of shifting light; stillness and movement, the work becomes an evocation of the elemental nature of water, responding to it’s
changing forms.

Both artists have been captivated by water for many years, engaged in making their photographic work separately, and, as they followed their own individual courses, conversing on numerous occasions about their common and divergent experiences and practice, to collaborate on a combined body of work that extends their dialogues.

‘Notes On Water' is a collection of around 50 images from a larger source.

‘Lost in water, willingly….’ Jim Cooke

‘Looking into the stillness of the pools to the reflections of trees, sky and clouds, I grasp at a sense of connection to myself, and to something greater beyond. As I explore working with thread and photography and sewing lines of embroidery thread through the surface of photographic paper, I perforate and puncture the photographic surface, introducing stitched interventions that are both marks of damage, and acts of repair, altering the landscapes, that allow an imaginary sense of control.’
Katya de Grunwald
